Wisconsin farmer says soybeans okay, corn phenomenal

A western Wisconsin farmer is expecting yields that are above his production history, but nothing to brag about.

Tom Gillis grows corn and soybeans near River Falls, not far from the Minnesota border.  He tells Brownfield his soybeans need a little more time and moisture. “Ours are still at least ten days out, I think. We haven’t really formed an opinion yet. We were just actually irrigating them the other day here yet so there’s enough green in them it still warrants doing that.”

Gillis is more optimistic about his corn. “The corn is probably going to be phenomenal. I think we’ll be above our APH (average production history) on our corn. We were kind of worried it was behind there for a stretch, and all of this lovely, nice July weather we’re having now in September has set it right up where it belongs.”

Gillis says he’s relied on irrigation since he hasn’t seen substantial rain in more than a month.
