Wisconsin farmer wanting one more good rain

A central Wisconsin farmer says he wouldn’t mind a few more rains to finish out his crops.

Chad Bruss, who raises corn and alfalfa on a 180-head dairy in Green Lake County, says it’s been dry in his area.

“We got a nice rain over a two-day period here at the end of July, and it really helped bring crops back,” he says.

He tells Brownfield he expects to begin chopping silage in early September, but the alfalfa crop has been keeping him busy in the meantime.

“We made a lot of dry hay, more dry hay than we have the last couple years for the young stock.”  He says, “We’ve been getting good crops and the 4th crop looks really good here coming in the next week or so that we’ll be cutting.”

As of Sunday, the USDA says 67% of Wisconsin corn is in good to excellent condition, which is down two percent from last week.  Ninety-three percent of the crop is silking, 53% is in the dough stage, and 9% is dented.  Sixty-six percent of soybeans are in good condition, which is down 2% on the week, with 96% blooming, and 81% setting pods.  Seventy-three percent of oats are harvested.
