Wisconsin Farmers Union president: corn filling out, third-cutting looks strong

A southwest Wisconsin farmer says 13 inches of rain since the start of June has been plentiful for crops this season.

Darin Von Ruden tells Brownfield, “Some of the early planted corn is already putting on some pretty good size ears here in the western part of the state.”

He says forage crops have also benefited.

“I’d say second crop was above average and the way third crop is coming with this moisture and heat right now, we’re going to see a really good third crop too,” he shares.

The Vernon County organic dairyman is also serving as the current Wisconsin Farmers Union President.

The USDA says 10 percent of oats in Wisconsin are harvested, and condition is rated 80 percent good to excellent.

Corn in the state is 23 percent silking and rated 79 percent good to excellent. Soybeans are 62 percent blooming, 16 percent setting pods, and rated 74 percent good to excellent.
