Wisconsin FFA members win at national convention

Some Wisconsin individuals and chapters brought home awards from the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.

First, The National FFA Agriscience Fair recognizes students who gain real-world, hands-on experiences in agricultural enterprises. Students use scientific principles and emerging technologies to solve complex problems related to agriculture, food and natural resources in six divisions — either individually or in a team.

Owen Hemling of the Beaver Dam FFA Chapter in Wisconsin won the award for Animal Systems in Division 5.

Agricultural proficiency awards honor FFA members who, through Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs), have developed specialized skills that they can apply toward their future careers. Hannah Oleson from Adams-Friendship FFA won the award for Beef Production-Placement.  She has held several roles at different production operations for her SAE projects. Having started with basic tasks such as feeding pre-measured buckets and mucking pens, Oleson graduated to independently operating all farm machinery, making breeding decisions, and performing artificial insemination for the cattle. Oleson is supported by her parents, Joshua and Kelly, and her FFA advisor, Becky Grabarski.

Ava Nicole Medo of the Wittenberg-Birnamwood FFA won an award for Goat Production – Entrepreneurship/Placement while assisting on the family’s 750-head commercial dairy goat farm, Medo Dairy Goats. Medo is confident in her ability to identify illness and treat it properly and in her ability to assist a doe who is having difficulty birthing. Medo oversees the welfare of the herd and provides useful input to improve the operation.
