Wisconsin lawmakers gather information at the farm

Some Wisconsin state lawmakers learned what issues are important to farmers by visiting three farms and a processor.

The tour of three different types of farm operations and the Seneca Foods canning plant in Janesville gave lawmakers an up-close look at how things like tariffs, regulations, and ag research impact ag-related businesses.  Assembly Ag Committee member Don Vruwink says this helps him at the Capitol. “About regulations, about best practices, about even where we build the roads and making sure we preserve good land, so as a member of the Agriculture Committee, I like to hear from the farmers themselves because that makes me a better legislator, and that I can share their concerns before I make any votes.”

State Ag Secretary Brad Pfaff tells Brownfield people in Madison need to understand the needs of farmers. “First of all, we need to recognize the hard work of our family farmers and the dedication of our family farmers. Second of all, we need to recognize the fact that this is a labor of love.”

Local farm group and government leaders also toured Arndt Farms, Skelly’s Farm Market, and Rebout Farms where a roundtable discussion of issues was held.
