Wisconsin Pork Association urges participation in Thursday rule hearing
The Wisconsin Pork Association is urging producers to testify Thursday in favor of removing state guidelines for PRRS and PEDv testing.
Morgan Worek tells Brownfield the testing guidelines within ATCP10 added cost and red tape without helping pigs or farmers. “We have not seen improved swine health benefits specifically related to PRRS and PEDv. We’ve not really seen any change of the prevailence in our state regardless of the required of the required testing and movement restrictions associated with the rule.”
Worek says the rule has placed additional burdens on Wisconsin’s pork producers, making it hard to compete with surrounding states. “The cost of the testing, compliance, ability to move livestock, quarantines, there’s several details around that that have really been burdensome to our farmers.”
Worek says WPA has seen some producers stop raising pork in Wisconsin because of the overburdensome rules. She says there are several programs and resources at the national level that help improve animal health and biosecurity on the farms and the WPA board says the state rule is not needed.
Worek says pork producers should participate in a public hearing Thursday either in person or virtually.
The Wisconsin Pork Association says there are three ways to attend and speak at the public hearing:
