Wisconsin State Fair shows moms about dairy

Urban moms learned more about nutrition and dairy farming at the Wisconsin State Fair.

Dairy Lane board member Nicole Barless tells Brownfield a new initiative this year was to target “momfluencers” showing mothers in the Milwaukee area that have a social media presence more about milk, butter, and cheese, and where it comes from. “We brought them over to our milking demonstration area and showcased a milking demo and how to care for cows, and then we had a fair amount of people from dairy, moms ourselves, to talk with these ladies and kids and really help them better understand the dairy industry so they can take that and share it with their followers.”

Barless says many of the moms had little or no previous agriculture experience, but learned a lot at the fair. “They don’t know about how what goes into our cows really impacts the quality of milk and how that impacts the quality of cheeses that they’re using to cook with and to taste, and then most importantly, just learning about all of the hard work and care that goes into caring for our cows.”

Barless says working with the Milwaukee moms was successful, and they would like to expand the program for next year’s State Fair.
