Wisconsin’s harvest continues

The dry conditions continued in Wisconsin last week, allowing for rapid harvest progress.

USDA statistician Greg Bussler says a killing frost occurred in northern Wisconsin last week, and the fast-paced harvest for vegetables, cranberries, and potatoes continues, along with soybeans and corn.

Eighty-five percent of the corn is mature, with 26% of the corn for grain harvested.  That’s nine days ahead of average.  Moisture content of the corn is averaging 21%.  The corn silage harvest is 92% finished.  Overall, 61% of the corn is rated good to excellent.

The soybean harvest is 83% finished, three weeks ahead of average.

The potato harvest is now 92% finished.

Grant Holley with the Wisconsin Cranberry Growers Association tells Brownfield the harvest is just past half finished in central Wisconsin, and approaching halfway in northern Wisconsin.

Thirty percent of the fall tillage has been completed.

Winter wheat planting is 80% done, and 49% of the winter wheat has emerged.

The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay is 95% finished.

USDA says topsoil moisture levels are 1% surplus, 38% adequate, 39% short, and 22% very short.
