Futuristic-sounding data collection is happening now
Terry Brase has impressive credentials. The Kirkwood Community College instructor teaches in the field of agricultural geospatial technology. That is to say he teaches about unmanned aerial systems (UAS), or drones. They’re used for the purpose of mapping farm fields collecting photographic data regarding several different agronomic parameters. The gadgets generate a lot of questions about what usefulness the data has and who owns the data. But most of all, Brase is interested in the agricultural applications possible with UASs. “We’ve used it for about 15 flights flying infrared imagery over a cornfield and a soybean field,” Brase told Brownfield Ag News, prior to his talk at the On-Farm Network Conference in Ames, Iowa.
