Is soil health a buzz word?

Soil health is getting more and more attention in the ag industry, but Todd Martin with the Independent Professional Seed Association wonders if it’s becoming a buzz word.

“Everybody’s talking about it,” he says. “It’s important – there’s no question – but what are we really doing to impact change the way we’re doing business.”

He tells Brownfield the industry needs to invest in ways to help farmers make more money while spending less money on technology that may or may not improve productivity on the farm.

“In the soil health sector, the important thing is to do the real work behind it and figure out what’s going to be game changing from a farmer’s perspective, replace what he’s doing, and give him better information and better yields rather than just find the new gadget that’s going to cost him money.”

Martin spoke to Brownfield at the 2018 NAFB Convention in Kansas City.

The Independent Professional Seed Association (IPSA) was founded in 1989 and represents nearly 100 seed companies from more than 25 states who produce corn, soybeans, small grain, and forage seeds.
