On-Farm Network adds cover crop trials
There is a considerable amount of interest in cover crops now as part of Iowa’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy. The On-Farm Network added cover crops trials to its program in 2012, and in 2013 nearly 30 On-Farm Network cover crop trials were planted around the state.
“With the Nutrient Reduction Strategy, there’s a mandate for a lot of cover crop acres to be planted and we see this as an opportunity to try to figure out what does work with cover crops, what doesn’t, and what farmers need to do to make it a successful practice,” says Tristan Mueller, operations manager for agronomic research with the On-Farm Network.
At the recent On-Farm Network Conference in Ames, Mueller visited with us about the cover crops trials and some of their early findings.
