PEDv update in Indiana

The Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus was one of the most talked about issues at this year’s Midwest Pork Conference.  Indiana State Veterinarian Dr. Bret Marsh provided and update on the disease in the state.  “Since the first cases were diagnosed in May, overall we’ve gotten along pretty well,” he says.  “I think the national report shows us with 32 confirmed cases in Indiana.  Fortunately we’ve not seen some of the catastrophic losses some states have seen.  But, it’s only early December and we’re hopeful for a good winter.”

Because the PED virus is still new, Dr. Marsh says treatment options are limited.  “It’s the biosecurity measures we’ve talked about for years, whether it pertains to individuals, traffic on and off of farms, or isolating new purchases, being cognizant of trucks and trailers and cleaning them from site to site,” he says.  “Those type of basic biosecurity procedures are going to be important.”

He tells Brownfield if you suspect your herd is infected, it is best to call in a veterinarian so a confirmed diagnosis can be made.
