Questions remain about the real impact of PEDV
Many hog market analysts expected the September 27th hogs and pigs report to reflect the negative impact that PEDV—the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus—has had on the pig numbers. But the numbers in that report caught many of those analysts by surprise.
The average pigs saved per litter number was another record high for the quarter at 10.33, an increase of two percent from a year earlier. The June to August pig crop number of 30.2 million head was also two percent above a year ago. And the “pigs under 50 pounds” figure was 20.09 million head, up one percent from 2012.
During a post-report conference call with reporters, analyst Steve Meyer of Paragon Economics talked about the scope of PEDV and why the numbers in the report were a bit of surprise.
