Stateler to lead Ohio Pork Council

Duane Stateler of Hancock County has been elected President of the Ohio Pork Council (OPC).

Stateler tells Brownfield that one of his goals will be to continue to build on the OPC strategic plan.

“We’ve got a packer subcommittee and we’ve got a PRRS subcommittee which has also turned into the PEDV subcommittee and we hope to keep that ongoing as we try to get a handle on PEDV and PRRS that’s really a chronic problem for our herds here in Ohio,” said Stateler.

Speaking at the Ohio Pork Council annual meeting on Tuesday, December 10, Kevin Waetke, Vice President of Strategic Communications for the National Pork Board (NPB) said PEDV is the number one issue identified by pork producers.

“We do an annual producer survey at the Pork Checkoff and their number one concern right now is research in PEDV,” Waetke said. “2014 will be a year where we see more and more investment in research and really an underscoring of the importance of biosecurity measures on the farm and really help share the news with producers about how to protect their farm.”
