Over the next couple of days, a surge of subtropical moisture interacting with a cold front will lead to widespread showers and thunderstorms from the south-central U.S into the Midwest and Northeast. Five-day rainfall totals should reach 1 to 3 inches or more along the axis of heaviest precipitation, extending northeastward from Texas. However, showers will largely bypass the middle and southern Atlantic States, excluding southern Florida. By early next week, widespread showers will affect northern California and the Northwest, while much of the Southwest will remain dry. Although above-normal temperatures will cover much of the country during the next 5 days, triple-digit (100-degree) heat will be limited to the Desert Southwest and portions of the Plains.
