A low-pressure system near the Texas coast will drift northeastward before moving ashore tonight or early Thursday, with limited opportunity for further development but with an ongoing threat of heavy rain and flash flooding. Additional rainfall should reach 5 to 10 inches or more from the upper coast of Texas into portions of western Georgia and the panhandle of Florida, with Southern precipitation subsiding by the weekend. Meanwhile, a series of fast-moving cold fronts will generate occasional showers and thunderstorms from the northern and central Plains into the Northeast, with rainfall totaling as much as 2 to 4 inches from the east-central Plains into the lower Midwest. Some of the heaviest Midwestern rain should fall during the weekend. In contrast, mostly dry weather and above-normal temperatures will prevail west of the Rockies. Heat will occasionally spread as far east as the southern half of the Plains, while generally cool conditions will cover the Midwest and environs.
