Laura made landfall Wednesday night near the Texas-Louisiana border. Catastrophic damage may occur through Thursday morning in southwestern Louisiana and along the upper Gulf Coast of Texas as Laura moves inland due to a 10- to 15-foot storm surge, sustained winds as high as 130 mph, and torrential rainfall (5 to 10 inches or more). After moving inland, Laura will weaken but continue to produce gusty winds, heavy rain, and isolated tornadoes. The remnants of Laura should cross Arkansas on Thursday night and Friday before turning eastward toward the mid-Atlantic coast on Saturday. Elsewhere, significant rainfall should be limited to the Great Lakes and Northeastern States, as a cold front begins to interact with the post-tropical remnants of Laura. The western half of the country will receive little or no rain during the next 5 days, aside from isolated showers across the Rockies, Plains, and Southwest. Toward the end of August, an autumn-like surge of cool air will arrive across the Midwest and northern parts of the Rockies and Plains.
