Understanding Alpha-Gal Syndrome

Alpha-gal syndrome is an allergy to the carbohydrate called alpha-gal, which is found in mammals.

Eden Stewart, an Field Specialist in Nutrition and Health Educator at the University of Missouri says it’s transmitted by the Lone Star tick.

Cases of alpha-gal syndrome have been on the rise. The University of Missouri Extension has released several new publications to help individuals and families understand, prevent, and manage the condition.

Symptoms, which typically occur within two to six hours after eating, range from hives and digestive distress to severe anaphylaxis.

All this week our Healthy Living program will focus in magement and awareness of alpha-gal.
