August egg production up on year
A larger supply of laying hens continues to boost U.S. egg production.
The USDA says 9.43 billion eggs were produced last month, rising 5% on the year, with the total number of laying hens also up 5% at 382.801 million head and the production per layer increasing 1% to 2,464 eggs per 100.
Placements varied based on demand expectations and bottom line management.
Placements of egg-type chicks for future hatchery supply flocks fell 7%, while placements of broiler-type pullets were slightly higher.
The USDA’s updated annual egg and poultry production projections are out October 9th.
