August milk supply increases slightly as production dips

Growing dairy herds in Kansas and South Dakota are helping to lift U.S. milk production despite reduced cow output.

Milk production in the U.S. increased 1.7 percent in August, with production totaling 19.9 billion pounds. Per-cow production dropped a pound from the year before.

USDA says farmers increased the dairy herd size by 167,000 head from last year, and 15,000 from July to 9.7 million head.

Top states increasing milk production during June include Kansas (+13.9 % and South Dakota +8.4%).

Michigan dairy cows had the highest output at 2,345 pounds per cow, more than 300 pounds above the national average.
