Early August rains boost Missouri soybean, corn prospects

Two Missouri farmers say the early August rain has been welcome for the crops.

Drew Lock in northeast Missouri says the soybeans have been soaking it up.

“There’s a lot of potential out there. This rain is going to go a long ways. Obviously we were, we were super wet and cold early. The heat actually I think helped the bean crop and this rain was pretty timely.”

Warren Stemme in eastern Missouri says August is when soybean yields are made and it’s a good start.

“It’s going to help the soybeans set more pods and fill pods.”

Stemme says the corn is pretty much made on his farm, but Lock says the corn at his farm was hit with some pollination issues in the July heat, and that’s taken the top off the corn yield.

Lock says the rain can help improve kernel size and test weight as the crop moves through grain fill.
