Farm bill action likely pushed to lame-duck session

The CEO of the National Cotton Council says he’s not expecting Senate floor time for the farm bill before lawmakers leave for the October recess.

Gary Adams says it’s not showing up on the Senate’s floor calendar yet.

“This is an issue that’s going to be moved or pushed into the lame duck session.”

U.S. Senate Ag Committee Chairman John Boozman has also indicated this to be the case. In a recent press release, Boozman says he wants House and Senate Ag Committee leaders to use the recess to continue negotiations so Congress can move quickly after the mid-term elections.

Adams tells Brownfield “I know there will be a lot of questions about what the lame duck looks like, and I think a lot of that may hinge on what the mid-term election looks like in November. That’s probably the best chance to wrap up a Farm Bill 2.0.”

Adams says there’s a lot to do in the lame duck session, and he’d like to see the Buy American Cotton Act get attached to the farm bill or another large bill.
