Ohio farmer calls harvest unpredictable amidst historic drought conditions

A southwestern Ohio farmer says harvest activity is in full swing.

Eric Tipton says challenges this year are making it unpredictable.

“In this particular field that I’m in, you can see anything from some of the some of the best corn we’ve raised to stuff that’s in the 100 and 200 and 30 bushel range,” he says. “It’s all in the same path and it just so all over the board.”

He tells Brownfield the drought has impacted yields.

“There’s definitely been some impact,” he says. “I mean, where we had some of the thinner soils really, really get burned up. I think this is going to be one of those years where you’ve got some dark pockets or some soils with some higher water holding capacity. I think that that’s going to be our saving grace.”

But, Tipton says he’s still optimistic about the crop.
