Rain “really shut off” after Independence Day, drying up yield outlook in central Minnesota
Conditions have steadily deteriorated since the 4th of July for a central Minnesota farmer preparing for harvest.
Nick Peterson of St. Cloud says crops looked as good as they’ve ever looked heading into the Independence Day weekend.
“We just kept catching quarter-inch, three-four tenths to keep the crop growing, but none of that was really getting downstream. After that point, I mean the rain really shut off.”
He tells Brownfield soil type will factor into yields.
“In central Minnesota there’s a lot of kind of marginal-type ground, some of it’s irrigated (and) some of its’ not. There’s going to be big shortfalls in production, (the crops) really got hurt.”
Peterson says the dryness has accelerated crop development and he anticipates corn harvest beginning in the next two to three weeks.
