Southwest Iowa farmer sees trucking costs rise with diesel prices

Fuel surcharges are helping a southwest Iowa farmer who runs a trucking business.

Kelly Garrett grows corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, and has a 1,000-head cow/calf herd.

“With the trucking contracts we have we’re maintaining some profitability, and the fuel surcharge we use has really been nice to do that.”

He tells Brownfield diesel costs are up from around $3.40 per gallon before the conflict with Iran began to nearly $6 now.

“Where we get our loads and things like that, they’re really paying attention to that. And the fuel surcharge helps, but it doesn’t eat it all up.”
