Spider mites impacting soybean fields
An extension field crops entomologist with the University of Illinois says some farmers are battling spider mites this spring.
Nick Seiter says the pest thrives in dry conditions.
“Spider mites are the ones that I get concerned about that can really cause a lot of injury.” He says, “They’re very heavily driven by drought stress and high temperatures, which we’re in right now.”
He told growers during a recent Illinois Soybean Association webinar that scouting is key.
“There’s a lot of things that will cause a little patchy, yellowing out there.” He says, “The good thing about spider mites is a few good rain showers will more or less make them go away.”
Seiter says while spider mites can cause significant injury, they’re typically not found across entire fields.
