Summer rainfall delivers strong corn yields in southeast Kansas

A southeast Kansas farmer says plentiful rainfall this summer helped contribute to an incredible corn harvest.

“We were probably at 150 to 200 bushels, but our average was up there.”

Ben Bellar tells Brownfield at the end of April it was dry. “But, then we kept getting rain. We never had too much right. We had the right amount of rain.”

He says flooding was an issue in his immediate area. “I had some fields that have drainage tile, and they barely every flowed. That told me that the soil could hold more water. We didn’t flood, but we had a lot of neighbors that did.”

As for soybean harvest, Bellar says he’s concerned that his crop lost a significant amount of yield potential from the August heat waves.
