USDA slashes sorghum expectations
The 2026 U.S. sorghum crop will be considerably smaller than 2025.
The USDA now has production at 283.98 million bushels, a decline of 12.46 million on the month and more than 152.845 million bushels below a year ago because of drought impacts on yield and acreage numbers. The 2026 yield is pegged at 54.4 bushels per acre, 1 less than August, with planted area at 5.98 million acres and harvested area at 5.225 million, both down 130,000 from last month.
Harvest is underway.
In 2025, U.S. sorghum production was 436.825 million bushels with an average yield of 72.6 bushels per acre on planted area of 6.64 million acres and harvested area of 6.02 million acres.
Slower demand was also a factor for the reduction in sorghum planting.
New crop ending stocks were down 2 million bushels at 21 million, but the cut in production was almost totally canceled out by a lower export guess, now at 160 million bushels. The average 2026/27 farm price is estimated at $4.60 per bushel, compared to $4.30 in August and $3.70 for 2025/26.
The new marketing year for sorghum began September 1st.
The USDA’s next round of supply, demand, and production projections is out October 9th.
