Weather challenges take toll on Nebraska crops

A central Nebraska farmer says it’s been a wild year for weather and that will likely impact his crop’s yield potential.

Tyler Bose says he expects a major impact on corn yields. “We had a lot of problems with drought. We had intermittent rains where we got some heavy rain, but it was in short amount of time. We also got hit with a significant windstorm that has affected that.”

He tells Brownfield, “The one that kind of surprised me was dryland corn where we didn’t get a lot of rain. Depending on your row direction, it defoliated pretty bad. Some of the irrigated depending on how soon you irrigated or had moisture on it in recent days, there were some fields where it got blown over recently.”

But, he’s optimistic about soybean and sorghum yields this fall, which were not as affected by the weather.

The USDA says 7 percent of corn has been harvested with 54 percent mature. Soybeans are 3 percent harvested. Pasture and range conditions are 15 percent good-to-excellent.
