Weekend storms bring too much rain to Wisconsin farmer

A southeastern Wisconsin farmer says his fields have been inundated by weekend rains.

Casey Kelleher, who grows corn and soybeans in Jefferson County, tells Brownfield, “We had anywhere from 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 inches of rain.”  He says, “We could have used this all in July when we had nothing for four good weeks.”

With corn harvest around a week away, and soybeans not far behind, he says some dry weather is needed.

“Last year was phenomenal.  ‘24 was really good, but just that July weather this year hurt the corn.”  He says, “Actually, with the August rains we had, I think our beans will be better than they have been the last couple years. Corn will still be respectable, just not where we’ve been the last couple.”

As of Sunday, the USDA says 2% of Wisconsin corn is harvested with 61% in good to excellent condition, 85% dented, and 38% mature.  Fifty-eight percent of soybeans are in good condition with 49% dropping leaves.
