Groups urging support of Federal ‘Safe Trucking Act’
Ohio’s Congressional delegation is being urged to support the Federal Safe Trucking Act.
Nine state trade associations, including several agricultural groups, say the proposed legislation would give states the authority to allow heavier trucks equipped with six axles to access designated interstate highways.
“If you spread that weight out, from five to six axles and increase it, you’re going to reduce the amount of weight on the axles,” said Adam Ward, Executive Director of the Ohio Soybean Association, one of the groups urging support for the safe trucking act. “Therefore making it safer for people on the highway.”
Ward tells Brownfield with federal legislation, it would be possible to see something at the state level as well.
“It would have an impact here in the state of Ohio, we could then take this legislation and go work with the state legislature,” Ward said. “It could reduce taxpayers overall burden by lessoning the impact on the roadways by spreading it out to another axle, we’re working very hard to make this happen.”
