Missouri producers testify at State Beef Checkoff hearing

MO Beef Checkoff hearingMissouri beef producers gathered at the State Fairgrounds Wednesday for a hearing on a state beef checkoff referendum. The proposed state beef checkoff for $1 a head would be used specifically for the state of Missouri. The Missouri Cattleman’s Association says it’s an opportunity to add to the national checkoff to result in much needed promotion, education, and research.

Naysayers at the hearing at the Missouri State Fairgrounds say the timing is wrong:  At a time when cattle prices have dropped 30% in the last year, asking for a 200% raise when they have a $700,000 in reserves is bad timing.

Farmers in favor say it’s a “no-brainer” and to let it come to a vote.
