Broiler numbers dip on week, rise on year

Broiler hatchery numbers were mixed.

The USDA says 250.686 million broiler-type eggs were set into incubators, falling 1.237 million on the week partially due to high temperatures in some states, but up slightly on the year thanks to a larger number of laying hens.

194.367 million broiler-type chicks went into meat production, 668,000 less than the previous week, but modestly more than a year ago, with cumulative placements holding 2% faster than last year.

Those birds will start heading to market later this month.

The USDA’s updated annual broiler production projection is out September 11^th.
