Certified Indiana Bred bringing pork to families in need
Indiana Pork is helping address food insecurity in rural communities across the state.
Jeanette Merritt says the organization recently donated more than $5,000 worth of ground pork to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry in Vanderburgh County.
“It’s harder for families to afford in the grocery store,” she says. “We have to make sure that we’re helping the people closest to us. Indiana Pork has a priority to make sure that we’re putting ground pork into food pantries. It makes a difference for those that rely on it to feed their families a safe, nutritious meal.”
The donation is a part of the Certified Indiana Bred program. The names of the top performing participants in Indiana Pork’s Skillaton series were placed on a spinning wheel during the Grand Drive at the Indiana State Fair. Casey Schillinger of Vanderburgh County was the winner and chose to donate the ground pork back to her local community.
