Dietitian highlights dairy’s role in student-athlete health

The role of dairy in a well-balanced diet.

Emily Lyday, a registered dietitian with St. Vincent Sports Performance, says proper student nutrition helps support healthy brain and bone development.

“Often times dairy comes in as a side, as an addition to their meal, just to help support it a little bit more to get some of that extra protein and carbohydrates in,” she says. “If those nutrients are coming from milk, we’re also going be getting that extra hydration.”

She tells Brownfield chocolate milk is one of the best examples of that.

“With that extra chocolate, we’re getting more carbs,” she says. “Having those extra fats is what helps support the absorption of our fat-soluble vitamins, that helps support performance along with the added electrolytes we get from chocolate milk.”

Lyday says incorporating dairy into a student’s nutrition plan helps connect them to the products that dairy farmers produce but also helps support overall health and wellness throughout the season.
