Food for Peace shipment delivers U.S. wheat, rice to Kenya

A southwest Kansas farmer says USDA’s Food for Peace program helps strengthen global food security and bolsters demand for American ag products.

Gary Millershaski says he’s traveling to Kenya this week to help deliver rice and hard red winter wheat to refugee camps. “If you look at the number of populations in Africa, I’m thinking it’s pretty good to put a seed down there and let them taste what it’s like to have hard red winter wheat that’s respectable.”

He tells Brownfield that could lead to potential trade opportunities.  “They might get a craving, and they may say what can we do to afford that so we can buy it on our own?”

Miller says the shipment includes nearly 20,000 metric tons of hard red winter wheat and 30,000 metric tons of rice. The Liberty Grace unloaded the grain at the Port of Mombasa on Monday.
