Harvest progress at a standstill in Nebraska

Central Nebraska farmer Clay Govier says excessive rainfall has put corn and soybean harvest on hold.

“Progress has pretty much come to a standstill. I think that’s going to be the case for at least another week.”

He tells Brownfield there are widespread stalk quality issues. “The soybeans are standing pretty good, but we are seeing some lodging. For corn, we had several high wind events in the middle of the summer that made the corn lean over. I’ve heard some horror stories where a silage chopper couldn’t get under the corn.”

Govier says the onset of disease pressure at the end of the growing season will likely have an impact on yields. “I’ve seen some pretty nasty pictures of corn that looks like it’s been dead for a month and it’s the middle of November already.”

The USDA says 11 percent has been harvested, one percent behind of last year. Soybeans are 5 percent harvest, 5 percent behind last year.
