High prices, uncertain markets: volatility frustrates cattle industry

Market volatility remains a reality for cattle producers.

Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association executive director Kaitlyn Root says there’s a lot of optimism as prices remain high, but.

“What’s frustrating (is) we’ve seen really just in the past six months, maybe even a year, just a few things that have come across the media or news that really changed the market in a negative way.”

She tells Brownfield in some instances that information was not based on facts.

“Or even just information that didn’t need to change the market at all. So the volatility can be frustrating, but producers are feeling pretty optimistic right now with the markets.”

Root says the Trump administration talking about beef imports and the threat of New World Screwworm have both influenced the cattle market.
