ICA President: High cattle prices don’t guarantee profits
The president of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association says economic challenges have weighed on many producers.
Craig Moss, a producer from Hull, says cattle prices might be high, but that doesn’t mean profitability.
“What has been equally as high is the input costs associated with raising cattle. At the end of the day, we are margin operators. Where prices may look high, it does not necessarily mean our margins have improved.”
He says he’s encouraged that beef demand has held despite higher prices.
“Beef, we feel, is a great value. Pound for pound, ounce for ounce, the nutrition found in beef in an incredible value on the grocery store shelves today.”
Moss says the recent volatility in the cattle markets has created financial uncertainty for the industry and its producers.
He made his comments Thursday at an ICA press conference near Mitchellville:
