Organic fruit growers gain more specific USDA crop insurance options
Some organic fruit growers can now protect their crops with more specific crop insurance options from USDA.
Undersecretary for Farm Production and Conservation Richard Fordyce tells Brownfield, “We’re trying to be able to be in a position to support specialty crop growers in a more meaningful way.”
“This is just another step,” he says. “We’ve had a number of announcements really this year around specialty crop risk management tools.”
Fordyce says farmer roundtables help improved organic cranberry and stonefruit programs to provide a separation of enterprise and options units by organic practice in policies. Crops transitioning to organic production also qualify.
Producers who select enterprise coverage often receive a premium discount for combining acreage into a single unit. Options Units all insurable acreage to be divided into smaller units, by practice or land location.
