Illinois Governor signs executive order aimed at diesel costs

IFB President Phillip Nelson & Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker

Illinois has joined the growing list of states to allow on-road use of dyed diesel typically used for agricultural purposes.

Governor JB Pritzker issued a state disaster proclamation and signed an Executive Order to provide relief on diesel fuel costs for the agriculture industry during the fall harvest season to support Illinois farmers.

The executive order directs the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) and the Illinois State Police (ISP) to allow on-road use of dyed diesel through the end of the year.

It also directs IDOT to consider extending the Illinois Harvest Permit (IHP) program into the winter, spring, or summer of 2027 if diesel shortages and elevated costs persist. The program allows heavier truck weights on specified routes, helping agricultural producers transport goods more efficiently.

Pritzker has also directed state agencies to consider additional protections for farmers, and the order gives the state greater flexibility to respond to continued disruptions in fuel markets and the agricultural economy.
