Insects becoming more noticeable in South Dakota

A South Dakota-based agronomist says he’s noticed an uptick in pest pressure in soybeans and alfalfa.

Hoegemeyer’s Stu Carlson tells Brownfield, “Seeing a lot of spider mites in soybeans. Alfalfa we’re seeing a lot of aphids and weevils.”

He says alfalfa weevils can very problematic.

“They have a huge impact if you leave them. You need to continue to scout and spray, even in these types of (dry) conditions.”

Carlson says pest pressure hasn’t been as big of an issue in corn despite an increasing number of corn-on-corn acres.
