Kansas farmer weighs winter wheat planting decisions
A southwest Kansas farmer says he’s trying to decide when to start planting winter wheat.
Gary Millershaski says his area has been in dire need of rain.
“We did luck out and get a few showers here in the last week to 10 days. Still, the ground is a little too warm to be planting.”
He tells Brownfield there’s also a concern about insects.
“The way the bug situation has been all year long, it makes me nervous putting any wheat in too early.”
Millershaski says it could be at least another 10 days before he starts planting.
“Maybe give mother nature another chance to give us a little bit more moisture to help rejuvenate our soil.”
Millershaski predominately raises wheat, but also grows dryland corn, milo and has a cow-calf operation.
