Peterson: timely rains have crops looking good in southwest Iowa

A farmer in southwest Iowa considers himself fortunate as many growers across the Midwest have received too much or too little rainfall.

Mark Peterson farms near Stanton and says rains have been timely this summer.

“In late June and part of July we’d get right on the edge of ‘oh good I don’t have to mow the lawn this week.’ Then it would rain and ‘oh darn I’ve got to mow the lawn.’ But well let’s see, that’s good for the corn and soybeans Mark, so shut up and be happy.”

He’s anticipating good corn and soybean yields.

“It’s going to depend a little bit what critters and diseases do we have out there and what have they done to the crop. You can see where there’s places where something is working on them already.”

Peterson, who spoke to Brownfield at last week’s Farm Progress Show near Boone, Iowa, said harvest in his area will probably start in the next two weeks.
