Preparing to seed a fall cover crop
Many farmers are finalizing plans for seeding a fall cover crop.
Jeff Jackson with CROPLAN says growers who use the cover for forage will probably want to air seed it or apply with a drill.
“So that we know our investment is getting put towards a viable, large crop seeded well to come up in the spring.”
He tells Brownfield cover crop seed can also be broadcast with an airplane or drone.
“This is my opinion, that when we aerial seed we are simply looking for more of a cover crop. That we get part of it established and get some ground cover, we’re okay with it. Anything just kind of sprinkled on top is a little bit harder to get it consistent and more forage yield for the next year.”
Jackson says he’s intrigued by triticale as a winter cereal because it can be used just as a cover crop, or as a good forage source.
