Soybean quality survey helps promote U.S. soy in global markets

Brent Rendel of Miami, Oklahoma, United Soybean Board Director

A United Soybean Board member says farmers can help demonstrate the quality of U.S. soy as the industry works to expand global markets.

Brent Rendel from Oklahoma tells Brownfield farmers are encouraged to submit soybean samples at harvest through the checkoff’s annual quality survey.

“We provide them with a kit that’s got a prepaid label in it and bag, and it goes off to a university researcher who tests it for all kinds of grain qualities,” he says. “The good thing is it’s no cost to the individual farmer. They get the results back sent to them in the mail.”

He says data from the samples are collected anonymously and used to promote the quality of U.S. soybeans.

“We need to show our global partners who are importing soy and have choices of where they procure that soy, show them the quality and the characteristics of U.S. soy and why it’s a better fit.”

Rendel says the details of U.S. soybeans also benefit U.S. customers.

“We need to know what our protein levels are because that is extremely important to the feed industry. We need to know what our oil content levels are because that is extremely important to the cooking oil, industrial uses and fuel segments.”

The sampling is part of the annual U.S. Soybean Quality Survey, which has tracked crop quality for several decades.

Soybean samples are due to USB on October 21, with results available by mid-December. More details are available here.
