USDA increases sorghum yield guess

USDA’s sorghum crop estimate is up on the month, but sharply below a year ago.

Production is now seen at 291.075 million bushels, rising 3% from September on a higher yield guess, now at 55.7 bushels per acre on harvested area of 5.225 million acres but that’s 33% below 2025 due to considerably lower yield and acreage caused by drought and demand concerns. Last year, production was 436.825 million bushels with an average yield of 72.6 bushels per acre on harvested area of 6.02 million acres.

These numbers will change as harvest advances.

Ending stocks were 5 million bushels above a month ago at 26 million due to that higher production projection. The average estimated 2026/27 farm price is $4.50 per bushel, compared to $4.60 in September and $3.67 in 2025/26.

The 2026/27 marketing year got underway September 1st.

The USDA’s next round of supply, demand, and production numbers is out November 10th.
