Wet fall forecast raises concerns about harvest timing

A north central Ohio farmer says recent weather over the past month has led to uneven crop development across the state.

Patty Mann says both corn and soybeans are all over the board.

“We got got like four to five inches within a six or eight hour period,” she says. “In those areas, the low lying spots of beans that were actually drowned out, they’re yellow and dying. For the most part, the rain has been beneficial.”

According to the latest USDA crop progress and conditions report, Ohio corn is 73 percent dented, 16 percent mature, and rated 61 percent good to excellent. Soybeans are 15 percent dropping leaves and rated 58 percent good to excellent.

She tells Brownfield harvest is quickly approaching.

“The corn is just starting to get some brown to it,” she says. “Just a week ago it was still green all the way to the to the bottom of the stalk. It’s going to be the end of month first of October I think till anything in this area is going to be ready to harvest.”
