Rain, cooler temperatures help South Carolina soils

After a number of areas reported 100 degree and above temperature readings Monday and Tuesday, scattered rainfall and cooler temperatures in the second half of the week helped recharge soil moisture in South Carolina.Rainfall totals ranged from less than a half an inch to more than three and a half inches, and as of Sunday, 4% of the state’s soil has a moisture surplus, 47% has adequate moisture and 49% is called short to very short.

Even with the recent rainfall, harvest is running ahead of schedule in most areas with 14% of corn harvested, 89% of peaches collected, 69% of tobacco harvested and the hay harvest complete.

88% of soybeans are blooming with 58% setting pods and cotton has almost completely squared with 79% of bolls set.

Livestock and most crops are in generally good condition.
