Fieldwork underway in Wisconsin

The warm, dry weather has a lot of farmers in the fields across the Badger State. The weekly crop progress report from the National Ag Statistics Service says temperatures were 6 to 7 degrees above normal last week allowing 20 percent of the spring tillage to be done, 16 and 14 percentage points ahead of the five and ten year averages respectively. 35 percent of the oats crop is planted, 25 points ahead of the ten-year average.

Winter wheat and alfalfa are greening up but it is still too early to tell if there is any winterkill in most areas. We could use some rain, statewide, soil moisture is rated 67 percent adequate and 12 percent surplus leaving 21 percent in the short to very short category.
